Taking Time to Talk Turkey

Turkeys? Come on, Elizabeth. What do turkeys have with creating my healthy lifestyle?

Here's the story.

I was out in a friend's yard last evening about 9:30...

... (Here in North Dakota at the middle of June it's still broad daylight at 9:30.) So I was visiting friends who live just a short ways out from town, and about 9:30 last night we went out into the yard to see if the turkeys were home.

Country living in North Dakota leads to rather frequent wildlife op's. This is one of the main reasons I moved here, by the way. To put myself into an environment where I could get out of town, spend time with friends, remember that life is about more than work, and enjoy the experience of living.

We spotted a big black blob up on one of the taller trees and, quietly walking closer, distinguished it as Mom turkey and her little ones. Here they were, sitting way up on a branch with mom in the middle and all the jr's huddled in on either side. Mom had her left wing over one bunch and her right wing over the other. All you could see of the jr's were a whole bunch of little heads sticking out.

My friend went for the camera and instructed me, "Don't let them come down from the tree." :-).

Anyway, altogether, we spent probably 15 minutes or so hanging out quietly in the yard observing before Mom started to view us as paparazzi. Eventually, she moved her group to a different tree. It was very cool - I counted 7 little ones as they found their way across the yard. The new tree had another adult and even more jr's, so my friend's yard is obviously quite popular in the turkey kingdom.

What does this have to do with creating a healthy lifestyle?

Hanging out in the yard with a friend in the evening watching wildlife IS a healthy lifestyle, at least for me. Healthy living isn't just eating right, exercising, finding fulfilling work, and doing stuff. Sometimes it's simply taking time to have a life.

Today's blog posting encourages you to do the same. Savor the moment. Get outside, even for a short time. Hang out.

Enjoy life!
