Didja get to the fair yet?

Hi. No question today. Just a little reminder, as I'm so fond of offering, to take a break and get outside to enjoy the summer.

In North Dakota where I live, it's state fair time. I'm fortunate enough to live in the community where the fair is hosted each year, so it's fairly easy to get in the spirit. But maybe it's something else where you live - concerts in the park (we have those, too), a trip to the lake with friends, symphony garden tour, kids' ball game, playing tourist at a historic site in your area - whatever you please.

So exactly how is this part of your healthy lifestyle?

Glad you asked.

First, it provides a diversion and change of pace from your daily routine. You'll see new things or learn about days gone by. Maybe you'll find a type of plant that would be just perfect in that shady corner of your garden - or get the full scoop on a noxious weed you've been trying like the dickens to get rid of. Keep your eyes open and your creativity will thank you.

Benefits: relaxation, information, creativity.

Second, supporting community activites enhances your sense of belonging to something. For the full experience, it helps to participate. If you're not the type to march down Main Street with a funny hat on, then try volunteering. Sell hot dogs at the church booth, make refreshments, pass out programs for a concert - or for the business-minded, contribute something for the kids' t-shirts.

Benefits: community involvement, feeling a part of something, warm fuzzies from doing good.

Third, it gets you out with your people. Maybe you'll attend the event with friends. Or perhaps you'll run into people you know when you get there. You might even meet someone new. In any case, you'll be building a basis for ongoing relationships based on common (hopefully pleasurable) experiences. Like this: "Hey, I saw your kid in the marching band last Saturday. They sounded terrific!"

Benefits: relationship-building, rapport.

And in an era where personal friendships and informal supportive networking are at an all-time low, this might just be the biggest benefit of all.
