After many weekends working recently, most of this one went to the yard. Here's the thing. You gotta balance out your life.
Ok, you know that.
Think of it this way: Yin, yang. Active, sedentary. Thinking, doing. Salt, sugar. Exercise, rest. Ultimately, your life will create the balance for you if you don't do it consciously on your own.
I know I advocate taking action when the time is right.
But I also advocate re-charging your batteries when they run down.
Now you may be snickering because you already know this. "Does she think we don't know this already?" you'll say.
Of course you know it. But how often do you act on what you know?
And, more important, do you recognize what happens when you don't create the balance your life demands -- on purpose? Think, for just a moment, of the things you feel "compelled" to do - whether it's eating sweets or any other behavior you say you want to change, but don't.
The kind of thing that has you say, "I don't know why I do it, I just do!"
Now figure out what its opposite is for you. Find a way to balance the behavior. Maybe you eat sweets to make up for the fact that you don't bring enough sweetness into your life in other ways. Maybe you yell at the cat (though I couldn't see why - they're so darned cute!) because you're frustrated with your job.
Consciousness is the key. Choosing the balance you want is infinitely better than letting the chips fall where they may because you didn't get around to it. When the chips do the choosing, you're not gonna like where they fall.
A man I knew some years ago swears he never again had to take a sick day once he allowed himself the pleasure of practicing his guitar regularly. Used to be he'd only play the guitar when he was home sick from work. Once he became conscious of the pattern, he played the guitar more often and never gets sick.
Worth the trade-off? You bet!
