Stress-Busting Lesson #1
Make a powerful choice to influence your life.
At this point, you have two choices.
Choice #1 is subscribe to the Myth of Stress Management:
"Contained within the Myth of Stress Management is a very unhealthy and disempowering implication...
"You are a victim of the high-stress world you live in. You have no control over your stress and are powerless to address its source. The best you can hope for is to manage it somehow - by relaxing."
from Stress In The Background: How to Thrive in a High Stress World
by Elizabeth Eckert, PhD
Or, Choice #2, you can learn to look at stress as something you can influence. This involves a process of exploring your life to see where and how your stress shows up.
This process can be fun, challenging, exciting, playful, and extremely rewarding. There will be times when it will be appropriate to relax, and you will.
There will be other times where action is called for. Action resolves the source of the stress that's bugging you right now. Action gets you out of the role of the victim and back in control of your life.
"But if I knew how to do that, I would have done it already!"
I can hear that little voice in the back of your head just as well as you can. Cool, huh?
And you're completely right. I believe you. If you knew how to resolve the source of your stress, you no doubt would have done it already. Your little voice is right on.
Let me help you interpret what it's telling you:
"There is a resolution to be found.
Right now, I don't see it.
There is something yet to learn."
Stress-Busting Lesson #1: There is something about your stressful situation that you can influence. When you recognize what it is and assert that influence, you stop being a victim and begin to take control of your life. You don't have to do this on your own; there are resources available to help and support you.
