Stress-Busting Lesson #5
The myth of no time.
As the author of a book on self-sabotage, I've heard it all. The "why I can't do it" myth that comes in most frequently is the hands-down winner. "I don't have time for this!"
Here's how it goes:
I know Jimmy's been acting out. Probably a phase. If it doesn't resolve itself, we'll do something about it. Things are really hectic at work now.
Sure we should be investing for the kids' college fund. We'll get to it.
Doctor said I need to lose 30 pounds. Cut back on fast food and exercise more. Right. When am I supposed to fit that in?
Let's face it. Unmanaged stress can lead to a bunch of problems you don't want. Or have time for!
"Stress can lead to ill health in any number of ways... It occurs on two levels.
"First, the experience of being in a stress-filled lifestyle typically leads you to make less healthy choices about the basics of life — diet, exercise, sleep, relationships — sometimes it seems like too much to ask to even take a vitamin pill.
"Second, the reaction of your body to the stress itself creates illness."

It may seem like you don't have time for the basics that make life work well. But that's not reality. The truth is that once you take time for the basics of life, you have more time to do the things you want.
You're better organized.
You're more able to say "no" to things that don't support your goals.
You feel better and have more energy.
Your actual longevity in years increases. Talk about more time!
Like most people, if you want to make the dream real, you'll need two things.
Information to help you make better choices in the moment. To inspire you that your dreams can be achieved. And to give you solid answers for those people in your life (or the voice in your head) that threaten to interfere with what you know you need to do.
Support to help you through the day-by-day challenges and changes you will inevitably run into. If you want the satisfaction and peace you've been dreaming about, you'll need to bring it about. And that means making different choices than you're used to.
Tip: You are not expected to somehow already know everything. You'll need new information and ideas to create your new life. All you're expected to do is locate the information you need and use it. |
The e-book Stress In the Background: How to Thrive in a High Stress World shares information you can use to resolve your stress. In clear language, it:

Stress-Busting Lesson #5: It's ever so tempting to fall in to the trap of "no time." You will need to apply the "no" rule, of course. Part of taking control of your life is to prioritize. Certain activities will drop out. But choose carefully! Create time to explore ideas and activities that support your goals. Drop out ideas and activities that keep you stuck.
